Usage

Such as is used to give examples.  It is used to give examples of something mentioned either before “such as” or after “such” and before “as”. There is a slight difference between these two forms.

For instance,

I have visited countries such as India and Pakistan.

  • Here India and Pakistan are two of the many countries I have visited.

I have visited such countries as India and Pakistan.

  • Here India and Pakistan are two of the “specific” kind of countries I have visited. Basically India and Pakistan are qualify for the kind of countries (developing, asian, etc) I have visited.

Let’s come back to the question now.

Criteria such as adherence…, protection…, and observance. What follows such as are examples of criteria !!

The problem in all the incorrect options is the usage of such as.

In C and D, we have “such a variety of criteria as”. However what follows as is not variety but criteria. So when I say “such varieties of criteria as”, what follows as should be examples of variety and not criteria. Therefore C and D are wrong.

B, C and E are also wrong because of preposition by after as. We should have nouns following ‘as’, as we want to give examples of criteria and examples of criteria should be nouns.

Also “according to” is more precise than “in accordance with”

Correct Answer is choice A for the reasons mentioned above.
